In June 2020 I decided to Join Fiverr and work as a freelance writer. I have no idea where it would take me and how the experience would be. But after a year of working on Fiverr and freelancing, I have learned the honest truth and have my opinion about Fiverr itself.
If you don’t know what Fiverr is. It’s a site where you can find all kinds of freelancers. Writers, Graphic designs, Teachers/guides, Digital marketing, programming and so much more. Even with those categories I just said there so many categories in those. For someone looking for a Freelancer it’s great and for a Freelancer who is just starting or needs some extra money Fiverr is your place to get some money.
When I joined Fiverr last year. I just graduated from school, Covid was getting worse and well I couldn’t get a job and I needed money. Before Fiverr, I was trying other writing sites. I was trying Patreon to sell some of my work I was on a site called medium that I could have myself a little blog. I was trying everything but Fiverr and it was strange because I knew Fiverr was a thing but I decided to move on and look at other things but nothing was working.
Someone I knew mention Fiverr and I was like oh yeah I know that site. So the next day I went onto Fiverr and made an account. I started looking around in the writing category and I was very lost in what I would be writing. Sure enough, they had a category for something I loved doing and that was writing stories for people who either can’t write a story or want to hire someone just because.
So I become a seller and I made a gig. Making the gig itself took some time. I had to figure out prices and what each price would involve and how to write something to attract people to my site and I had to make a nice Ad photo for it. The Ad photo I think was the easiest but of course, I did that last.
Once I got everything set up before I could post my gig I had to take an English test……. If I failed 3 times I would have to try again in 6 months. Now I always aced English but at the same time, I am horrible at any type of test or quiz. However, I took the quiz and I got like 90% and I can safely say I was very proud of myself and I was also excited that I could finally have a gig up and running.
I posted the gig in early June and I advertised like crazy I posted everywhere that I was now on Fiverr and writing for people and I waited days weeks months to get orders. I got nothing. I lost hope and even forgot I had the app. One day I went back one and looked at my gig and thought what was I doing wrong all these other short story writers are getting orders and are doing good and I’m not getting anything. As I looked around I realized my gig photo was the same as ten other people who were also doing short stories.
So that day I changed up the photo and made it different from everyone else. Did I search up on google colours that attract people to ads? Yes, I did. The same day I wrote some things for my portfolio so people could see my work before they ordered. Besides fixing up the photo I fixed up the prices and worded things better.
I updated the gig and I waited and once again nothing was happening. Barley getting any views on my gig and wasn’t even getting clicks. After a very long week, I decided to advertise it all over the place again. I posted on Instagram posted on Wattpad where I started off. I posted on Facebook. My ad ended up everywhere. Finally that day I finally got my first order and I was beyond excited and well proud of myself that my ads worked. I was ready to start working on the order and I realized it was a friend of mine who order my gig but I was still very happy.
I wrote my friend their story and sent it to them within hours and they gave me a great review on Fiverr. I’m not going to lie though I thought that would be my only order for months because it seemed like Fiverr was that type of app.
I was wrong though and by wrong, I was very very wrong. It seemed after that five-star review my views on my gig went from 60 to 500 views in a week and I was getting lots of clicks and within a week or two I was getting orders from people who didn’t even know me. So from June to early September, I had no orders. From late September to February I got 12 orders making around $210 including tips. I talked to lots of people and wrote amazing stories. Through the 12 stories, I got some people who disrespected me, tried to scam me and overall just made me block them. I had people tell me I’m an amazing writer and that I will be big one day.
After my last order in February, I stopped getting orders and my views went back down to 60 until last week when I got an order. Once again I was beyond excited and finished it in no time.
It’s June 2021 and I have been on Fiverr for a year now. Last year I had no idea what to expect from Fiverr. I remember going on Reddit looking for answers. I searched on google endlessly for people talking about Fiverr on their blogs.
So to new people who are still here after reading that whole story about my way with Fiverr here is my honest truth and the reality of working as a freelancer on Fiverr.
The biggest key that a lot of other people on Fiverr may say is that Patience is the key and it’s true. I could have easily given up on Fiverr and deleted my gig but I waited and waited and edited my gig along the way. You can always fix up and make your gig better. Make it different from the other freelancers in your category.
There’s a huge chance that Fiverr will not be your main or only job. I’m not saying it can’t be you never know nowadays. Different categories on Fiverr can get way more attention than other categories and you may end up getting way more orders and way more money.
Another thing is dont let people walk over you or try to make you feel bad make you lower your price or even scam you. I have had people after their order was done saying they paid to much for 3,000 words even though my price is pretty good and like other writers or even cheaper.
Besides the rude people and the scammers, you will meet some very nice sweet people who will respect you and just understand the hard work your putting into things and sometimes they give some nice tips with their orders.
Overall Fiverr will make you have those days of what am I doing wrong and why isn’t my gig doing good. Other days you will be filled with orders trying to complete them on time. Fiverr is great for people who are just getting into the freelancer world and wanting to learn some experience from it.
